Welcome to The Charleston Museum, America's First Museum, founded in 1773. Its mission is to preserve and interpret the
cultural and natural history of Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. We invite you to explore this rich, varied
history at the Museum and its two National Historic Landmark houses. All are located downtown, in America's Most Historic
City. Exhibitions feature objects from our extensive cultural, historic and natural history collections and introduce you
to the rich heritage of the Lowcountry, whose social and architectural legacy is reflected in our two premier historic
houses. Whether you have an interest in early Southern furniture or in Southeastern birds, The Charleston Museum has

Fort Sumter National Monument
Fort Sumter is known as 'Where The American Civil War Began'. Decades of growing strife between North and South erupted in
civil war on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery opened fire on this Federal fort in Charleston Harbor. Fort Sumter
surrendered 34 hours later. Union forces would try for nearly four years to take it back. Fort Sumter National Monument has
one of the best collections of 19th century seacoast artillery anywhere in the United States.

Kings Mountain National Military Park
Thomas Jefferson called it "The turn of the tide of success." The battle of Kings Mountain, fought October 7th, 1780, was
an important American victory during the Revolutionary War. The battle was the first major patriot victory to occur after
the British invasion of Charleston, SC in May 1780. The park preserves the site of this important battle. Here visitors
can learn about the battle and enjoy outdoor activities.

Children's Museum of South Carolina
Our museum has collected a broad range of exhibits which appeal to everyone! Our "Magic School Bus" is surrounded by
general science activities to encourage experimentation and observation. There are exciting activities in "Bubble Mania",
"Fairway Physics", "Children's Museum ER". "Stuffie", Aquariums, Microsoft computer center, the "Calling all colors"
gallery, Beachcombing, and always lots of opportunities to create artwork to take home. We regularly have special events
so you never know what neat things there will be to do!

Ninety Six National Historic Site
Walk Where Battles Were Fought & Heroes Were Forged! Here settlers struggled against the harsh backcountry to survive,
Cherokee Indians hunted and fought to keep their land, two towns and a trading post were formed and abandoned to the
elements, and two Revolutionary War battles that claimed over 100 lives took place here. Visitors will see the original
1781 Star Fort, Historic roads like the Cherokee Path & Charleston Road, the original town sites of Ninety Six &
Cambridge, the reconstructed Stockade Fort & siege trenches, an Historic cabin we have set up as the Black Swan Tavern, &
much more!
