Sierra Safari Zoo
Sierra Safari Zoo has a wide variety of exotic animals from around the world including primates, big cats, small cats,
reptiles, sloth, and much more. There is a hands-on area where visitors can touch and interact with some of the gentler
animals, including many fallow deer. Most of the animals at Sierra Safari are selected for this climate. Those few who
need special heat and/or humidity have special facilities or are moved indoors during the winter months. The male deer in
the hands-on area are removed at the end of summer when their antlers are finished growing and their hormones tell them to
fight. During the summer, the males are growing new antlers and are "in velvet". It is a rare opportunity for people to
touch the antlers while they are in this delicate growing phase.
