Saint Croix Island International Historic Site
Saint Croix Island is the 1604 site of the first French attempt to colonize the territory they called l'Acadie and the
location of one of the earliest European settlements in North America. Members of a French expedition led by Pierre Dugua,
intending to colonize North America, settled the island in 1604. Seventy-nine members of the expedition, including Samuel
Champlain, passed the severe winter of 1604-1605 on the island. Thirty-five settlers died, apparently of scurvy, and were
buried in a small cemetery on Saint Croix Island. In spring 1605 the survivors left the island and founded the settlement
of Port Royal, Nova Scotia.
Location: The site is located eight miles south of Calais, Maine, on U.S. Route 1, and can be reached either by Route 9 from Bangor or U.S. Route
1, the coastal route from Portland and points south. The parking lot is located on the left after entering the mainland
site.

Moosehead Lake
Nestled among forested mountains, Moosehead Lake stretches as far as the eye can see until its blue is swallowed by the
dark green of the trees. There are over 80 islands in the lake, the largest being Sugar Island. Towns that border the lake
include Greenville, Maine to the south and Rockwood to the northwest. Mount Kineo, with 700 foot (200 m) cliffs rising
straight up from Moosehead Lake, has attracted visitors for centuries, from early American Indians, to 19th century
"rusticators," to today's hotel guests. Various species dwell among its cliffs and talus slopes, including peregrine
falcons and rare plants. Whether you're seeking to go fishing, hunting, camping, white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking,
hiking, mountain biking, exploring, skiing, snowmobiling, golfing, sailing, photography, viewing wildlife or just taking
in the natural beauty of the region, it's all here.
Location: Off Maine State Route 6/15 in Greenville, ME
